12 Nations Issue Joint Statement Announcing Plan to Ban Trade in Israeli Settlement Goods
In a significant diplomatic shift, twelve nations—including Canada, the UK, France, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden—issued a joint ministerial statement expressing their firm intention to introduce national trade restrictions or support European bans on goods originating from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The joint statement highlighted that actions by the Israeli government in the West Bank, particularly rapid settlement expansion and rising settler violence, are severely undermining the viability of a two-State solution.
Highlighting specific concerns over projects like the E1 settlement tenders, the coalition of foreign ministers called for an immediate halt to civilian administrative expansions and forced displacement of Palestinian populations. The initiative builds on measures already implemented by nations such as Ireland, Spain, and Belgium, signaling a coordinated push among major Western governments to enforce international law and preserve diplomatic avenues for a lasting peace in the Middle East.
