51st Toronto International Film Festival Opens with 293 Screenings and Global Stars
The 51st edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) officially commenced on September 10, 2026, bringing together international filmmakers, Hollywood stars, and movie enthusiasts in Toronto. Running through September 20, the prestigious festival is set to showcase 293 feature films and shorts from around the world, featuring 60 world premieres. Oscar-winning director Siân Heder’s biographical drama 'Being Heumann', which chronicles the life of pioneering American disability rights activist Judy Heumann, opened the festival before a sold-out crowd at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Top Hollywood actors including Jodie Comer, Naomi Watts, and Sebastian Stan are attending the event to promote their latest cinematic projects. Despite economic discussions surrounding trade policy and ticket price increases, organizers expressed strong confidence in TIFF's role as a primary launching pad for upcoming award season contenders. With nearly 6,000 international delegates present, the festival features galas, red-carpet fan experiences, and industry panels across seven premier venues in downtown Toronto over the 10-day celebration of cinema.
