83rd Venice Film Festival Opens with George Clooney Tribute and Danny Boyle's 'Ink'
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival officially opens on September 2, 2026, at the Lido di Venezia, gathering global cinema stars, acclaimed directors, and international media for twelve days of premieres and competition. This year's festival launches with the world premiere of "Ink," a biographical drama directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle. Adapted by James Graham from his stage play, the film stars Jack O'Connell and Guy Pearce, chronicling Rupert Murdoch's acquisition of British newspaper The Sun in 1969 and its transformative impact on media culture.
A central highlight of the opening ceremony is the presentation of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to legendary Hollywood actor, director, and producer George Clooney. Academy Award winner Laura Dern will present the official laudatio speech honoring Clooney’s extensive career in global cinema. Meanwhile, celebrated filmmaker and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal serves as the President of the International Jury for the main competition, overseeing a panel evaluating 21 feature films competing for the prestigious Golden Lion. Hosted by Italian actors Greta Scarano and Nicolas Maupas, the 2026 festival highlights a diverse slate of international cinema alongside pressing geopolitical themes, setting the stage for the upcoming global awards season.
