ADB Approves $182.89 Million Loan to Transform Karnataka's Public School Education
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $182.89 million loan aimed at accelerating the modernization of Karnataka’s public school system. Financed through ADB's results-based lending mechanism, this initiative marks the bank's first major direct support for large-scale public school transformation in India. The funding is aligned with the Government of Karnataka's educational reform framework and the overarching goals of India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
To amplify the impact of the financing, ADB's loan will be accompanied by a $10 million grant and a $25 million guarantee provided by the International Finance Facility for Education (IFFEd). The combined financial package is designed to enhance access to quality foundational education, modern learning resources, and career-oriented skill development programs, particularly for students in lower-income and rural regions across Karnataka.
The initiative focuses on upgrading physical infrastructure in state schools, integrating digital technology in classrooms, enhancing teacher capacity building, and strengthening school governance frameworks. By modernizing state-run schools, the government aims to reduce dropout rates, elevate learning outcomes, and provide equitable educational opportunities for millions of children across Karnataka.
