The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced the appointment of former Indian international footballer Mehrajuddin Wadoo as the head coach of the India U17 men's national football team. The 42-year-old former defender formally assumed charge on Wednesday as the national squad, popularly known as the Blue Colts, kicked off their preparatory camp in Margao, Goa.
The national camp is currently conducting trial phases to identify and nurture promising youth talent ahead of the upcoming AFC U17 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2027 Qualifiers. India has been drawn in Group E of the qualifying tournament, which will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from November 11 to November 20. The Indian youth team will compete against host nation Malaysia, Palestine, Singapore, and Guam to secure qualification for the main tournament.
Wadoo, an AFC Pro Licence holder, brings significant managerial experience, having previously served as head coach for domestic clubs including Mohammedan Sporting Club, Real Kashmir FC, and Sudeva Delhi FC. As a player, he represented India 54 times between 2005 and 2012, playing a key role in winning the 2005 SAFF Championship, the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, and the Nehru Cup in 2007 and 2009.
Expressing his vision for the squad, Wadoo stated that creating a structured environment for player development and preparing rigorously for international competition will be his top priorities. The appointment reinforces the AIFF's broader commitment to establishing a solid grassroots pathway and developing young talent for long-term international success.
