AIFF Defends Brazil Friendly Priority Amid ASEAN Cup Withdrawal Criticism
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been embroiled in controversy following its decision to withdraw the Indian national team from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. The federation opted to pull out of the regional tournament to pave the way for a high-profile international friendly match against five-time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil, scheduled for October 3 in Kolkata. This move has drawn significant criticism from various quarters, including former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia and ex-coach Igor Stimac, who labeled the friendly as a potential "day of embarrassment" and questioned the financial implications and opportunity cost of skipping a FIFA-recognized competition.
In response, the AIFF issued a statement rejecting claims of any predetermined financial penalty for the withdrawal and strongly defended its decision. The federation highlighted that hosting a team of Brazil's stature presents an "exceptional opportunity" for Indian football, offering invaluable exposure and a morale boost for the national team, while also significantly increasing interest in the sport across the country. A delegation from the Brazil Football Confederation recently inspected the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, indicating preparations are well underway for the highly anticipated match. The AIFF views this friendly as a crucial step in raising the profile of Indian football on the global stage, despite the criticisms regarding its scheduling priorities.
