AIFF Introduces New 8v8 Format for Sub-Junior National Football Championships
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has introduced a brand-new competition format for the upcoming Sub-Junior Boys' and Girls' National Football Championships (NFCs) for the 2026-27 season. Designed in alignment with FIFA U15 World Cup format guidelines, the updated structure aims to modernize youth football development across India and better prepare young athletes for high-intensity competition.
Under the new technical rules, matches will be played in an 8-versus-8 format on a reduced pitch measuring 68 metres by 50 metres, featuring standard-sized goals. Each match will consist of two 20-minute halves separated by a 5-minute interval, with an offside line established at 23 metres. Crucially, the regulations permit unlimited rolling substitutions, giving coaches flexibility and enabling young players to gain significantly more match time and ball touches.
Participating state associations can register up to 50 players in the AIFF Competition Management System before finalizing a matchday squad of 12 to 16 players. The AIFF emphasized that shifting to small-sided games prioritizes decision-making, technical proficiency, and active participation. By overhauling the grassroots competitive landscape, the federation seeks to build a stronger foundation for Indian football's long-term future.
