Centre Amends E-Commerce Rules to Curb Dark Patterns and Enforce Price Transparency
The Union Department of Consumer Affairs has officially notified the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026, aiming to strengthen consumer rights and eliminate deceptive digital trade practices. The newly updated framework introduces stringent regulatory requirements for e-commerce platforms operating across India, focusing on price transparency, fair search algorithms, and robust complaint handling mechanisms.
Under the new regulations, which take effect on January 1, 2027, online marketplaces are explicitly prohibited from manipulating search results to mislead buyers or unfairly prioritize specific sellers. Furthermore, e-commerce platforms must display the true "prior price" alongside any advertised price cuts, preventing artificial inflation of original costs to present inflated discount percentages. The rules also mandate mandatory registration with the National Consumer Helpline's convergence portal and require platforms to provide buyers with an official copy of their logged complaints.
Government data reveals that e-commerce grievances accounted for nearly 29 percent of the total 1.77 million complaints registered on the National Consumer Helpline in 2025. By enforcing clear disclosures for sponsored listings and banning deceptive user interface tactics known as dark patterns, the Centre seeks to safeguard digital shoppers while balancing operational compliance for sellers.
