Coal India Daily Output and Power Sector Dispatches Surge 35% as Rains Recede: Ministry Release
According to an official press release issued by the Ministry of Coal, Coal India Limited (CIL) has recorded a dramatic recovery in coal production and supply dispatches to power plants as heavy monsoon rainfall receded across key mining belts. Average daily coal output rose by 35 percent, climbing from approximately 1.36 million tonnes (MT) during the first three rain-impacted days of September to 1.83 MT on September 6, 2026.
The press release highlighted that operational conditions at state-owned mining subsidiaries have rapidly improved following continuous dewatering efforts, road restoration, and bench stabilization. Dispatches to the national power sector witnessed a 24 percent increase, rising from 1.37 MT daily to 1.7 MT per day by September 6. Subsidiaries such as Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) led the recovery, with NCL posting a 61 percent jump in average daily production.
To prepare for long-term power plant demands, CIL doubled its daily Overburden Removal (OBR)—a key benchmark for future coal exposure—from 2.5 million cubic meters to 5.1 million cubic meters. The Ministry assured that with over 76 MT of pithead stocks and expanding dry-working horizons, fuel availability for electricity generation remains fully secured ahead of peak seasonal demand.
