Delhi High Court Directs Mandatory Audit of Student PGs Following Tragic Satya Niketan Building Collapse
In the aftermath of a devastating five-storey building collapse in South Delhi's Satya Niketan area that claimed seven lives—including five students—the Delhi High Court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to conduct an immediate structural audit of all Paying Guest (PG) accommodations and student hostels across the capital. A division bench ordered senior civic officials to inspect whether these facilities possess valid building permits, comply with safety norms, and adhere to prescribed occupancy limits, submitting a compliance report within one week.
The incident occurred during ongoing renovation work on an aging structure housing dozens of college students, raising severe concerns over unchecked structural modifications and commercial exploitation of residential properties. Law enforcement agencies arrested the property owners and contractors under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and criminal negligence. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India took note of the tragedy while overseeing a broader pan-India petition regarding illegal constructions, seeking detailed status reports from civic authorities across major state capitals regarding building code enforcement and student housing safety.
