Duane 'Keffe D' Davis Found Guilty in 1996 Murder of Rapper Tupac Shakur
Nearly thirty years after the drive-by shooting that claimed the life of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, a Las Vegas jury delivered a historic verdict by finding 63-year-old former gang leader Duane 'Keffe D' Davis guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon. The decision marks the first criminal conviction in a high-profile case that has intrigued and haunted the global music industry and hip-hop community since September 1996.
Prosecutors argued during the trial that Davis was the on-site commander of the attack, obtaining the weapon and tracking down Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion 'Suge' Knight following a physical altercation earlier that night in Las Vegas. While prosecutors did not allege that Davis fired the fatal shots himself, Nevada law holds orchestrators and accomplices legally accountable for murder. The conviction brings a historic resolution to decades of speculation, conspiracy theories, and cold-case investigations surrounding the 25-year-old artist's premature death. Shakur's family members expressed emotional relief in the courtroom as the verdict was read. Davis, who previously discussed his involvement in his 2019 memoir and public interviews, faces potential life imprisonment, with formal sentencing scheduled for October 13.
