East Zone Clinches Duleep Trophy Title After 13 Years with Dominant Display Against South Zone
East Zone ended a 13-year wait for domestic red-ball glory by securing the Duleep Trophy title following a commanding performance against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Captained by Ishan Kishan, East Zone dominated the five-day final from the outset, piling up a mammoth 708 runs in their first innings. Kishan led from the front with a spectacular double-century of 270, while key contributions across the order put South Zone under immense pressure.
In response, South Zone were bowled out for 336 runs, with skipper Tilak Varma top-scoring with 99, missing out on a deserving century. Experienced pacers Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar broke through South Zone's batting order, leaving the hosts trailing by 372 runs. Opting not to enforce the follow-on, East Zone batted again to solidify their position. In the second innings, Md Kounain Quraishi struck an unbeaten maiden first-class century (116 n.o.), while Kishan added another quickfire 80 to stretch the overall lead past 760 runs.
The match ended in a draw on the fifth afternoon, allowing East Zone to claim the trophy by virtue of their substantial first-innings lead. This marks East Zone's third Duleep Trophy victory and their first since the 2012-13 season. While former India captain Sunil Gavaskar later questioned East Zone's tactical approach for not pressing for an outright victory, the triumph remains a major landmark for cricket in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Bengal, highlighting the growing strength of East Zone's domestic pipeline.
