Education Ministry Extends Deadline for NMMSS 2026-27 Scholarship Applications to September 30
The Union Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for the submission of online applications for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic year 2026-27 to September 30, 2026. Implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy, the scholarship program aims to support meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections, preventing them from dropping out of school after Class 8 and encouraging them to complete secondary education up to Class 12.
Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to selected Class 9 students who qualify through a state-level competitive examination. Each selected student receives financial assistance of Rs 12,000 per annum, disbursed directly into their bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer through the Public Financial Management System. The scholarship continues through renewal mode from Class 10 to Class 12 based on academic progress.
Eligible applicants must be enrolled in government, government-aided, or local body schools with a parental income not exceeding Rs 3.50 lakh annually. Following the extension of the student application window to September 30, institutional level verification (L1) by Institutional Nodal Officers will remain open until October 15, while District Nodal Officer verification (L2) can be completed by October 31. Students are required to complete a one-time registration on the National Scholarship Portal before submitting their applications.
