The Election Commission of India (ECI) on September 7, 2026, issued the detailed schedule for bye-elections to fill critical vacancies in five Legislative Assembly constituencies across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and West Bengal, as well as one Parliamentary Constituency in Assam. The electoral exercise aims to restore public representation in constituencies that fell vacant due to political resignations and statutory developments.
According to the official notification released by the poll body via the Press Information Bureau, the formal gazette notification for the bye-elections will be issued on September 9, 2026. Candidates can submit their nomination papers until September 16, with scrutiny set for September 17 and the final date for withdrawal of candidatures fixed for September 19. Voting across all six constituencies will take place on October 6, while the counting of votes and declaration of results will be conducted on October 9, 2026.
The Assembly seats going to polls include Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, Thattanchavady in Puducherry, and Rejinagar and Nandigram in West Bengal, along with the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. The ECI emphasized that updated electoral rolls based on recent intensive revisions will be deployed to ensure free, fair, and transparent polling, while strict Model Code of Conduct regulations have come into immediate effect across the designated districts.
