Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani Confirms '3 Idiots' Sequel in Development with Original Lead Cast
Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has officially confirmed that a sequel to his 2009 blockbuster movie '3 Idiots' is currently in development. Speaking in an interview, the acclaimed director revealed that he and his writing team are actively developing the script for the long-awaited follow-up. Hirani emphasized that while the project is in its early writing stages, the intention is to retain the iconic original cast, including Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, who portrayed the beloved trio of Rancho, Farhan, and Raju.
Addressing details about the plot, Hirani clarified that the prospective story will not revisit the protagonists during their student days. Instead, the narrative will explore where life has taken the three friends two decades after graduating from engineering college. Interestingly, Hirani disclosed that the initial concept did not start as a '3 Idiots' sequel. While developing another story, the writing team realized that the narrative progression aligned naturally with the characters from the 2009 classic.
However, the director maintained a cautious stance regarding an official timeline, noting that the project will only move forward into production once the screenplay reaches complete maturity and satisfies expectations. Released in 2009, '3 Idiots' became one of the highest-grossing films in Indian cinema history, earning widespread critical acclaim and achieving global popularity across Asia and beyond. News of a potential second installment has sparked immense excitement among moviegoers and industry observers alike.
