Food Safety Regulator FSSAI Files Cases Against Nestle India Over Infant Nutrition Claims
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated three separate adjudication cases against FMCG major Nestle India over alleged non-compliance involving three of its infant nutrition products. The regulatory action follows detailed examinations of product samples and promotional materials found across e-commerce platforms. The food regulator flagged improper promotional claims on products including NAN Excella Pro Stage 1 and Lactogen Pro 1, noting that claims regarding human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and easy-to-digest whey protein violated regulations restricting promotional material intended to boost infant food sales.
Additionally, laboratory testing of a follow-up formula manufactured by Nestle India revealed substandard biotin levels that failed to conform to prescribed nutritional thresholds. In response, Nestle India stated that its products are fully compliant with applicable Indian regulations and that product labels had been previously approved by expert committees. The company reiterated that its assertions are backed by scientific literature and committed to cooperating with FSSAI during the ongoing legal review.
