G20 Innovation Ministers Adopt Carolina Principles for Emerging Tech and AI
G20 Innovation Ministers concluded a two-day high-level summit in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, adopting the "Carolina Principles for Emerging Technologies" to establish global frameworks for artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and digital infrastructure. Co-hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the summit gathered top technology policymakers, industry CEOs, and international delegations.
Union Minister of State for Electronics & IT and Commerce Jitin Prasada led the Indian delegation, advocating for stronger AI technology partnerships, increased semiconductor investments, and robust safeguards for generative AI models. The resulting consensus statement lays out six core policy pillars: pro-innovation regulatory frameworks, intellectual property policies for AI, technical workforce development, industrial investment in supply chains, AI standards, and technology deployment for economic prosperity.
In addition to the overarching principles, ministers finalized the G20 AI Prosperity Objectives and AI Prosperity Compact. These deliverables aim to expand private-sector partnerships and fund workforce training programs across member nations. On the sidelines, Indian officials held bilateral discussions with European Union and U.S. representatives to deepen cross-border research, semiconductor manufacturing, and data center capabilities.
