Giorgia Meloni Sets Postwar Record as Italy's Longest-Serving Prime Minister
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reached a landmark political milestone on September 4, 2026, becoming the head of the longest continuously serving government in Italy's postwar republic history. Taking office in October 2022 as Italy's first female prime minister, Meloni has now completed 1,413 consecutive days in power. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 1,412 days held by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's second administration between 2001 and 2005.
The milestone is particularly notable given Italy's history of political volatility, having seen 68 different governments in the 80 years since World War II due to frequent coalition collapses. Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy, marked the occasion with celebrations in the southern port city of Bari, highlighting administration achievements including employment growth and fiscal stabilization.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Meloni on social media, describing the achievement as a reflection of the trust reposed in her leadership by the Italian public. PM Modi emphasized that her stewardship has been instrumental in deepening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership and expressed enthusiasm for continued bilateral collaboration. Responding to the milestone, Meloni stated that political stability is not merely a record to celebrate, but an essential foundation that enables a nation to plan effectively, fulfill commitments, and command international respect.
