Home Ministry Announces 28th Western Zonal Council Meeting in Panaji Under Amit Shah's Chairmanship
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), through an official Press Information Bureau release, has announced that Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will chair the 28th meeting of the Western Zonal Council in Panaji, Goa, on September 7, 2026. Organised by the Inter-State Council Secretariat of the MHA and hosted by the Goa government, the meeting brings together key stakeholders from member states including Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
The Zonal Councils were established under the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 to provide a structured platform for open dialogue between the Centre and the States, as well as among neighbouring States. During the upcoming session, Chief Ministers and senior ministers, alongside top administrative officers, will discuss inter-state disputes, regional infrastructure, security, and joint socio-economic initiatives. Issues are first screened by a Standing Committee headed by Chief Secretaries before being tabled for ministerial resolution.
Emphasising the overarching vision of cooperative federalism, the MHA highlighted that the councils have served as an effective mechanism for consensus-building and resolving complex inter-state issues. The meeting underscores the Union government's push to align regional development with national goals through collaborative governance and regular inter-state consultation.
