IIT Gandhinagar and Gujarat Government Partner to Roll Out Climate Education in 1,000 Municipal Schools
In a major step toward practical environmental education, the Centre for Creative Learning (CCL) at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), in partnership with the Government of Gujarat, has launched an innovative hands-on climate education programme targeting 1,000 municipal schools across Gujarat. The initiative is designed for students in Grades 6 to 8 and is currently underway in urban municipal schools across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, and the Aravalli district.
Aligned with India's national Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the programme moves away from traditional textbook-based learning and focuses on experiential learning. Participating municipal schools connect online with IIT Gandhinagar faculty twice a month. During these interactive sessions, young students build their own functional weather monitoring instruments, including rain gauges, wind vanes, and anemometers, using accessible materials.
By constructing these tools, classrooms are effectively converted into miniature weather stations. Students actively measure, collect, and analyze real-time local rainfall and wind pattern data, connecting scientific concepts directly to their daily environments. Program coordinators emphasized that the initiative aims to build sustainable habits, deepen environmental awareness, and foster scientific curiosity among school children. The project demonstrates how institutional expertise can transform STEM education in public school systems across India.
