IMPPA Issues Clarification Following Bombay High Court Interim Order in Saffron Magicworks Legal Dispute
The Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) has issued a formal clarification statement addressing news reports and public communications concerning an interim order passed by the Bombay High Court. The legal matter involves an underlying dispute between producer Nikhil Dwivedi's production house, Saffron Magicworks Private Limited, and Vikramaditya Motwane's Andolan Films Private Limited, in which IMPPA was impleaded as a party.
On September 9, 2026, Justice Arif S. Doctor of the Bombay High Court perused draft amendments and accepted a statement from defense counsel undertaking not to act on a disputed arbitral award dated July 3, 2026, for two weeks. Concurrently, the High Court directed IMPPA not to declare Saffron Magicworks as a defaulter as a consequence of that award until further orders. Following widespread media reports suggesting that the court had imposed severe restrictions on the producers' body, IMPPA issued its clarification on September 13, emphasizing that its involvement in the dispute was limited strictly to its institutional dispute resolution responsibilities.
IMPPA stated that it holds no independent commercial claim or financial interest in the ongoing legal disagreement between the two film entities. The association urged that the court order be read strictly according to its express terms, confirming that no blanket restraining order has been issued against its routine operational functions. The court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for September 30, 2026.
