India and Afghanistan Review Measures to Boost Bilateral Trade and Economic Engagement
The India–Afghanistan Joint Working Group (JWG) on Trade, Commerce and Investment convened virtually on September 1, 2026, to review existing trade flows and outline strategies for deepening economic cooperation. The meeting brought together key government officials, regulatory authorities, customs experts, and diplomatic representatives from both nations.
During the discussions, representatives evaluated a broad range of operational issues impacting commercial exchanges. Priority themes included streamlining trade facilitation, enhancing customs cooperation through electronic data sharing, easing visa issuing procedures for Afghan entrepreneurs, and establishing smoother banking and financial channels to support cross-border commerce.
The meeting also highlighted critical product sectors where trade could be expanded rapidly, notably pharmaceuticals, processed agricultural goods, and dry fruits. Both delegations emphasized the strategic importance of improving cargo transit, port connectivity, and utilization of established transport corridors to lower transit times and operational expenses for businesses.
Both sides agreed to formalize institutional follow-up actions and establish joint monitoring mechanisms to resolve trade bottlenecks. The constructive dialogue underscores ongoing efforts to sustain regional economic stability, facilitate business-to-business engagement, and expand bilateral trade volumes.
