India and China Hold First High-Level Military Flag Talks in Arunachal Pradesh Sector
In a significant diplomatic and military development along the eastern frontier, the Indian and Chinese armies conducted their first Senior Highest Military Commander-Level Flag Meetings in the Arunachal Pradesh sector. The talks were held in two sessions across both sides of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), with the first session taking place at Wacha on the Indian side on September 6 and the second at Damai on the Chinese side on September 7.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the meetings during a press briefing in New Delhi on September 8. The high-level military dialogue was led on the Indian side by Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, Commander of the Dimapur-based 3 Corps (Spear Corps), which is responsible for guarding key stretches of the 1,140-kilometer frontier in Arunachal Pradesh. The meeting followed understandings reached during the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.
The flag talks focused on operational border management, clarifying local perceptions along the LAC, and resolving recent localized military friction in the Upper Subansiri sector. The MEA emphasized that establishing such high-level military communication mechanisms in the Eastern Sector—similar to existing mechanisms in Ladakh—is crucial for preventing misunderstandings and ensuring peace along the border. Official statements noted that bilateral relations between the two nations are gradually moving in a positive direction ahead of upcoming multilateral summits.
