India and Japan to Clash in Historic First-Ever Men's T20 International Match in Sano
In an unprecedented milestone for international cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) jointly announced on Friday that the men's national teams of India and Japan will face each other in a historic T20 International match on September 22, 2026. The match will be played for the Suzuki Cup at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, starting at 9:30 AM IST.
This landmark contest marks the first time senior men's cricket teams from India and Japan will meet in an official international fixture. The game serves as the launching pad for 'Sport 75', a bilateral sporting initiative stemming from a high-level agreement between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The initiative aims to deepen cultural and human exchanges between the two countries ahead of the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations in 2027, while also aligning with India's long-term vision to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
For reigning T20 World Champions India, the single-match tour offers a crucial warm-up ahead of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. For Japan, playing against one of cricket's biggest global powerhouses represents a transformative opportunity to elevate the sport's profile across East Asia. BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed enthusiasm for introducing cricket to wider audiences in Japan, emphasizing the board's responsibility to expand the game beyond its traditional strongholds.
