India Crosses 80 Lakh Doses in National HPV Vaccination Campaign for Cervical Cancer
India has achieved a historic public health milestone by administering over 80 lakh (8 million) doses of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine under its National HPV Vaccination Campaign, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2026, the nationwide campaign provides free, voluntary single-dose HPV vaccinations to 14-year-old adolescent girls with parental consent across government healthcare centers to prevent cervical cancer.
Public health monitoring data released on September 11, 2026, reveals that four states—Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Mizoram—have achieved 100 percent coverage of their identified annual target cohorts. Additionally, states such as Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Assam have crossed the 90 percent threshold. Uttar Pradesh registered the highest total volume, successfully vaccinating more than 22 lakh adolescent girls through structured school-based and community health outreach sessions.
Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality among women in India, with the annual eligible cohort estimated at nearly 1.2 crore girls. Health officials stressed that all immunization sessions are conducted under direct medical supervision with 24x7 adverse event management protocols in place. The successful rollout underscores India's expanding preventive healthcare infrastructure and its potential to drastically reduce cervical cancer incidence over the coming decades.
