India Hosts 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi as Global Leaders Gather
The 18th BRICS Summit officially opened at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12, 2026, under India’s chairship with the central theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.' The two-day summit marks India’s fourth time hosting the grouping of major emerging economies, bringing together leaders from member nations, invitees, and multilateral organizations.
Among the prominent international dignitaries arriving in the capital is Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking his first visit to India in seven years. His arrival sets the stage for critical bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at normalizing neighborly relations following years of border friction. Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres have convened for the summit.
The agenda focuses heavily on strengthening intra-BRICS trade mechanisms, expanding deep-tech and digital innovation cooperation, and reinforcing economic stability amid global geopolitical uncertainties. To ensure the smooth conduct of the high-profile international event, New Delhi authorities deployed over 30,000 security personnel and announced localized holiday arrangements to manage vehicular traffic. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India’s vision during its presidency centers on a humanity-first approach and constructive engagement for the Global South.
