India Orders Google to Remove Hundreds of Firebase Accounts Over Widespread Cyber Fraud
The Indian government has taken decisive action against a surge in cyber fraud, instructing Google to shut down numerous accounts hosted on its Firebase web development platform. The directive comes after the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) identified a sophisticated pattern where criminals were exploiting Firebase to create phishing pages that mimicked major Indian banks, including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank. These fraudulent operations were designed to lure unsuspecting victims with fake offers for credit card upgrades, reward-point redemptions, or government welfare payouts, leading them to download malicious Android applications. Once installed, this malware, sometimes referred to as "Android God Mode," allowed fraudsters to gain extensive control over victims' devices, siphoning off sensitive financial data like credit card details, one-time passwords, and personal information. The stolen data was then funneled back to the scammers' Firebase databases, enabling them to drain victims' funds.
The I4C ordered the removal of at least 57 Firebase-hosted websites and databases in August alone, emphasizing the scale of the misuse. This aggressive stance underscores the Indian government's commitment to combating the escalating threat of online scams, which reportedly cost Indian citizens nearly $2.4 billion in 2025. While Google's Firebase is a legitimate and widely used platform for app and website development, its accessibility and robust features have unfortunately made it an attractive tool for cybercriminals seeking seemingly credible infrastructure for their illicit activities. Google has stated its cooperation with Indian law enforcement, upholding its policies against financial fraud and malware on its services. This incident serves as a critical reminder for the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of digital communications, especially those requesting personal or financial information.
