India to Scrap Physical Boarding Pass Stamping for International Travelers from September 1
The Indian Bureau of Immigration (BOI) has announced a significant change for international air travelers, discontinuing the mandatory physical stamping of boarding passes at immigration counters from September 1, 2026. This move, communicated through an internal directive, aims to enhance the efficiency and convenience of the departure process across all international airports in the country. Passengers will now be able to present electronic boarding passes on their smartphones for immigration clearance. While physical boarding passes will still be accepted, they will no longer require an immigration officer's stamp.
The decision was made following observations that the existing practice of stamping physical boarding passes caused inconvenience to passengers and sometimes led to errors in reading due to improper or incorrect stamping. By eliminating this step, the BOI seeks to reduce delays and streamline operations at immigration checkpoints. This update is part of India's broader efforts to digitize travel procedures, with discussions also underway regarding potentially doing away with immigration entry and exit stamps on passports for Indian citizens in the future. Airport operators and aviation stakeholders have been instructed to educate their staff about the new procedure to ensure a smooth transition and avoid confusion among travelers. This marks a notable step towards modernizing international air travel from India, aligning with global trends of digital integration in aviation.
