Indian Equity Markets Fall as Brent Crude Surges Above $108 Amid West Asia Escalation
Indian benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty witnessed volatile trading and extended their weekly loss streak as global crude oil prices surged above $108 per barrel due to escalating military conflicts in West Asia. On September 11, 2026, the BSE Sensex tanked over 740 points intraday to a low of 74,160 before paring some losses to settle at 74,781.76, down 120.83 points. Simultaneously, the NSE Nifty 50 dropped 79.70 points to close at 23,398.10.
The sharp decline follows a turbulent week on Dalal Street, where benchmark indices dropped for five consecutive sessions. Analysts cited rising energy import costs, persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows, and soaring 10-year US Treasury bond yields approaching 5% as key headwinds for domestic equities. High oil prices pose direct risks to India’s GDP growth and corporate margins, particularly impacting realty, metal, and automotive sectors.
Despite heavy pressure across broader markets, value-buying in select IT majors and financial heavyweights like HDFC Bank provided late-session support, helping indices recover from day-lows. Foreign portfolio investors have pulled out nearly ₹8,000 crore from Indian equities in September, reflecting heightened global risk aversion amidst fears of prolonged geopolitical instability and sustained high interest rates.
