India's August 2026 Gross GST Revenue Surges 14.8% to Nearly ₹2 Lakh Crore
India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections reached ₹1,99,853 crore in August 2026, registering a 14.8% year-on-year increase compared to ₹1.74 lakh crore collected in August 2025, according to official data released by the Ministry of Finance. The strong revenue performance reflects sustained momentum in cross-border trade and robust consumption, although gross collections dipped slightly from July’s record ₹2.11 lakh crore.
A major catalyst behind the impressive August growth was the surge in tax revenue collected from imported goods, which rose by 29% year-on-year to ₹62,604 crore, compared with ₹48,546 crore in the same period last year. Domestic GST transactions expanded by 9.3% to reach ₹1,37,249 crore. State-wise figures showed broad-based domestic expansion, with Maharashtra collecting ₹28,779 crore (up 8%), Karnataka generating ₹14,148 crore (up 13%), and Gujarat contributing ₹12,047 crore (up 15%).
The government also registered a sharp increase in total tax refunds processed during August. Total GST refund disbursements jumped by 67.9% year-on-year to ₹31,795 crore, driven by a 72.6% rise in domestic refunds and a 61.8% expansion in export tax refunds. After accounting for these record refund payouts, net GST collections stood at ₹1,68,057 crore, reflecting an 8.3% growth over August 2025.
Economists and tax experts noted that while import buoyancy and domestic sales continue to provide strong revenue support, the significant increase in refunds highlights structural issues such as inverted duty structures. These matters are anticipated to be addressed during the upcoming 57th meeting of the GST Council, scheduled for September 12.
