India's Net Direct Tax Collections Surge 13% to ₹12.12 Lakh Crore on Strong Corporate Advance Tax Growth
India’s fiscal position showed continued resilience as net direct tax collections surged 12.96% year-on-year to exceed ₹12.12 lakh crore for the current financial year up to September 17, 2026, according to official data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The robust revenue mop-up was significantly propelled by a strong rise in corporate advance tax payments, signaling robust corporate profitability and economic momentum across sectors.
Gross direct tax collections during the period expanded by 15.19% to reach ₹14.32 lakh crore, compared to ₹12.43 lakh crore recorded in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. Total refunds issued during this period increased by 29.19% to ₹2.20 lakh crore, reflecting faster processing of legitimate tax claims by the Income Tax Department. Net corporate tax collection reached ₹5.56 lakh crore, registering a 19.48% growth, while personal income tax and non-corporate tax receipts rose 6% to over ₹6.16 lakh crore.
Advance tax collections, considered a critical barometer of business confidence and future earnings, grew 16.18% to ₹5.22 lakh crore. Corporate advance tax alone accounted for ₹4.16 lakh crore, posting an 18.09% increase. Furthermore, Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collections posted a steep 53% surge to ₹40,214 crore, supported by regulatory changes in tax rates on equity derivatives and sustained market trading activity. Tax experts noted that these figures demonstrate broad-based domestic economic activity, expanding corporate earnings, and high compliance rates across the taxpayer base.
