India's Retail Sector Sees 8% Growth in July, Footwear Leads While Jewellery Maintains Momentum
The Indian retail sector demonstrated robust performance in July 2026, registering an 8% year-on-year growth, as highlighted by the Retailers Association of India (RAI) Business Survey. This overall expansion, however, reveals varied performances across different categories. Footwear emerged as the strongest performer, leading with a 13% growth, closely followed by apparel and clothing at 12%. Quick-service restaurants (QSRs) also saw double-digit growth at 10%. In contrast, essential categories like food and grocery experienced the slowest growth at just 1%. The jewellery sector recorded a respectable 4-6% growth, indicating steady consumer demand despite not matching the rapid pace of footwear or apparel. Other segments like consumer durables and electronics, beauty, wellness, and personal care each grew by 7%, while furniture and furnishings matched the overall retail growth at 8%. The regional analysis showed consistent strength, with North and South India each achieving 9% growth, outperforming East and West India which grew by 6%. This positive momentum in July, following a softer Q1, positions retailers with a firmer foundation as they head into the crucial festive season, anticipating stronger consumer demand, particularly for bigger-ticket purchases that typically peak during festivals.
