Italian Cyber Firm Exein Secures $270 Million to Protect 'Physical AI' Systems
Rome-based cybersecurity firm Exein announced on September 15, 2026, that it has raised $270 million in Series C funding at a $1.7 billion valuation. Led by venture capital firm Headline, the significantly oversubscribed investment round included participation from Goldman Sachs, Sofina, the European Investment Bank Group, KfW Capital, and T.Capital, alongside existing investors Balderton, Lakestar, and Blue Cloud Ventures.
The massive funding round officially grants Exein unicorn status and makes it Europe's most valuable cybersecurity scaleup. Unlike traditional network-focused cybersecurity software that operates at the perimeter, Exein specializes in securing "Physical AI"—intelligent machines operating in the real world, such as industrial automation equipment, medical robotics, aerial drones, and autonomous vehicles.
At the core of Exein’s technology is its proprietary "Photon" architecture, which operates directly at the operating system kernel and processor level. By executing security protection inside the device hardware, Photon can detect and neutralize malicious code before execution, preventing physical hazards that could arise from compromised autonomous equipment. The technology is currently deployed across more than two billion chips manufactured by global semiconductor leaders including Nvidia, Arm, MediaTek, and AWS.
The company plans to use the new capital to accelerate its expansion across the United States and the Asia-Pacific region, double its workforce, and develop a specialized foundation model trained on machine telemetry. Exein noted that it currently detects around 5,000 unique, non-repetitive cyberattacks per week across its global network, representing a fivefold increase over the previous year as threat actors increasingly leverage AI to target physical infrastructure.
