John Ternus Officially Assumes CEO Role at Apple as Tim Cook Steps Down
John Ternus officially assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer at Apple Inc. on September 1, 2026, marking a historic leadership transition for the world’s most valuable technology company. Ternus succeeds Tim Cook, who served as CEO for 15 years and oversaw Apple’s expansion into a $4.6 trillion market powerhouse. Under the succession plan unanimously approved by Apple's board of directors, Cook has transitioned to the role of Executive Chairman of the Board.
Ternus, a mechanical engineer who joined Apple in 2001, previously served as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. During his 25-year tenure at the Cupertino-based tech giant, he led hardware engineering teams behind landmark devices including key generations of the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AirPods, as well as the transition to custom Apple Silicon chips.
As CEO, Ternus inherits Apple at a critical inflection point in the consumer technology market. He faces the task of reinvigorating the company's artificial intelligence capabilities, accelerating product cycles like foldable devices and smart home robotics, and maintaining global supply chain resilience. Industry analysts observe that Ternus’s deep engineering roots signal a renewed emphasis on product-led innovation as Apple navigates growing competition in AI and hardware technology.
