Karnataka Permits Teachers to Use 'Tr.' Prefix Before Names as Professional Title
In a significant move aimed at granting formal professional recognition to educators, the Karnataka government has permitted teachers across the state to use the prefix 'Tr.' (Teacher) before their names. The announcement was made on September 5, 2026, coinciding with National Teachers' Day, through Government Order No. EP 216 SLB 2026. This initiative places educators alongside other esteemed professions that hold recognized titles, such as doctors ('Dr.'), engineers ('Er.'), and professors ('Prof.').
State leadership highlighted that teachers play a foundational role in shaping future generations and contributing to nation-building. Nearly 4.5 lakh teachers working in government, aided, and private educational institutions across Karnataka will be eligible to adopt this title. The government stated that the decision aims to elevate the social status of the teaching profession, foster social harmony, and instill pride among educators.
The policy decision follows recent state measures to address teacher vacancies and strengthen educational infrastructure. Educational associations and teaching unions across Karnataka have welcomed the order, calling it a long-overdue gesture of respect that formally acknowledges the lifelong dedication of school and college instructors.
