Karthik Subbaraj's 'Dorothy' Receives Standing Ovation at Toronto International Film Festival Premiere
Tamil director Karthik Subbaraj's feature film 'Dorothy', featuring Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth, marked a major international milestone after receiving a standing ovation during its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 12. Screened under the festival's prestigious Centrepiece section, 'Dorothy' became the first Tamil feature film to premiere at TIFF in the past decade. Produced by Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment in association with Dhammam Films, the story is set in rural Tamil Nadu during the early 1990s and explores themes of friendship, patriarchal violence, and resilience following a tragic incident. The premiere at Toronto's Scotiabank Theatre was attended by director Subbaraj, the lead actors, and producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. The film features an 18-track original score composed by legendary music director Ilaiyaraaja. Speaking at the festival, Subbaraj highlighted that while the narrative is rooted in local Tamil culture, its core themes of human connection and prejudice resonate globally. 'Dorothy' is scheduled for its worldwide theatrical release on September 25, 2026.
