Work on the festive decorations has begun at the Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Kshetra in Mangaluru, which every year sits at the heart of the city's Dasara celebrations.
Volunteers were seen stringing lights along the temple gopuram and the approach roads, while artisans put finishing touches to the frames that will hold the Navaratri idols. Devotees who visited on Friday morning said the temple premises already had a festive feel.
The Mangaluru Dasara is known for its grand procession of tableaux through the city on the final day, which draws visitors from across coastal Karnataka. Traders on the nearby streets said they expect footfall to pick up over the coming week.
Visitors have been advised to plan for heavier traffic around Kudroli in the evenings once the illumination is switched on.
