Malaysia Approves New Indian Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu During Bilateral Talks
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on September 12, 2026, on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. A key outcome of the official discussions was Malaysia's formal concurrence to the establishment of a new Indian Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah state in East Malaysia. Official statements from the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the new diplomatic mission will significantly expand India's diplomatic, economic, and consular presence in the region.
The two national leaders reviewed bilateral progress following Prime Minister Modi's official visit to Malaysia in February 2026. Deliberations covered key growth sectors including trade, defense cooperation, infrastructure, energy, digital public architecture, fintech, and education. Notably, both leaders emphasized expanding strategic engagement in high-tech industries, with dedicated focus on semiconductor supply chains and critical technologies. Malaysia's participation in the summit as a BRICS Partner Country was warmly welcomed by the Indian delegation.
In addition to trade and technology, the dialogue focused on enhancing regional maritime security and strengthening ASEAN-India institutional ties. Both leaders expressed firm commitment to advancing the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The establishment of the Kota Kinabalu consulate is expected to streamline trade logistics, boost tourism exchange, and provide comprehensive assistance to the growing Indian expatriate community residing in East Malaysia.
