Ministry of Coal Clarifies Status of ₹37,500 Crore Coal Gasification Scheme Bids
The Ministry of Coal has issued an official press release to clarify the current application status of the government's flagship ₹37,500 crore Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal and Lignite Gasification Projects. Refuting media reports that claimed the incentive program had failed to attract any industry interest, the ministry emphasized that such conclusions are premature as the initial application window remains open until September 7, 2026.
According to the clarification, major public sector undertakings, including Talcher Fertilisers Limited (TFL) and NTPC Limited, have already submitted proposals under the competitive bidding process. The scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2026, aims to convert domestic coal and lignite into synthetic gas, methanol, ammonia, and urea. By promoting clean coal technology, the initiative seeks to reduce India’s reliance on foreign imports for critical energy and chemical feedstocks, advancing national energy security. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating smooth participation for industry stakeholders.
