Mirzapur: The Movie Hits Cinemas Worldwide in Landmark Streaming-to-Big-Screen Release
In a significant milestone for Indian entertainment, 'Mirzapur: The Movie', the big-screen adaptation of the critically acclaimed crime thriller franchise, hit cinemas across India on September 4, 2026. Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the feature film marks the transition of one of India's most popular streaming series into a grand theatrical release. Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar's Excel Entertainment alongside Amazon MGM Studios, the three-hour-and-seventeen-minute crime saga opens a brand-new narrative chapter within the franchise's universe.
Set strategically between Episodes 6 and 7 of the first season's timeline, the film allows fan-favorite characters to return on the big screen without disrupting the original series continuity. Pankaj Tripathi reprises his iconic role as the cunning mob boss Akhandanand 'Kaleen' Tripathi, alongside Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu returning as Munna Tripathi. Actor-politician Ravi Kishan joins the ensemble as a formidable new rival in the fight for Purvanchal's underworld dominance.
Ahead of its release, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) awarded the film an 'A' certificate with minor modifications. Backed by strong advance booking sales exceeding ₹12 crore across Hindi and Telugu formats, the film aims to test whether streaming audiences can be drawn into paying cinema-goers, potentially setting a precedent for future OTT-to-theatre franchise expansions in Indian cinema.
