New Delhi Successfully Hosts BWF World Championships 2026, Showcasing India's Sporting Prowess
New Delhi successfully hosted the 30th edition of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships from August 17 to 23, 2026, at the iconic Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. This marked a significant moment for Indian sports as the country welcomed the world's elite badminton players for the first time in 17 years, with the last edition held in India being in Hyderabad in 2009. The week-long tournament featured intense competition across five categories: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. The championships concluded with France's Alex Lanier stunning Kodai Naraoka of Japan to clinch the men's singles title, while South Korea's An Se-young successfully defended her women's singles crown.
India's participation saw former world champion PV Sindhu and top men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty leading the home challenge. A notable achievement for India came from the unseeded women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who secured a historic bronze medal, ending India's 15-year wait for a women's doubles medal at the World Championships. The successful execution of the event, lauded by BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, highlighted India's enhanced capabilities in hosting major international sporting events and provided invaluable exposure for Indian athletes. The large turnout of enthusiastic fans, particularly during the semifinals, further showcased Delhi's growing appetite for badminton and cemented India's position as a prominent global sporting destination.
