NMC Mandates Monthly Reporting of Student Suicides, Vacancy Filling in Medical Colleges
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a critical directive to all medical colleges and institutions across India, mandating monthly reporting of student suicides and unnatural deaths. This instruction, conveyed via a public notice on August 23, 2026, emphasizes the urgent need for institutions to maintain updated records and submit a certified Action Taken Report (ATR) by the end of each month. The directive aligns with a Supreme Court order, which had taken serious cognizance of a disturbing pattern of student suicides in higher educational institutions and consequently constituted a National Task Force to address mental health concerns.
Beyond suicide reporting, the NMC has also stressed the immediate and time-bound filling of vacant teaching, non-teaching, and key administrative positions within medical colleges, setting a four-month deadline for this task. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure a supportive academic environment and adequate resources for students. The commission requires colleges to report specific details for each suicide or unnatural death, including the student's course, date and place of occurrence, police intimation, FIR status, institutional inquiry, and corrective measures taken. Furthermore, institutions must ensure 24x7 access to qualified medical assistance on campus or within a one-kilometer radius, along with providing qualified psychological counselors. This initiative is expected to enhance accountability, improve data collection on student mental health, and facilitate the implementation of more effective preventive measures across medical campuses nationwide.
