Nvidia Invests $3.5 Billion in MediaTek to Expand Custom AI Chip Partnership
In a major development for the global semiconductor industry, artificial intelligence computing giant Nvidia announced a $3.5 billion investment in Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek as part of a multi-faceted strategic partnership. Under the deal, which involves Nvidia purchasing convertible bonds issued by MediaTek, the two technology companies will collaborate to expand AI capabilities across cloud infrastructure, personal computing, and autonomous automotive platforms.
A key element of the agreement is MediaTek’s adoption of Nvidia's NVLink Fusion ecosystem. This integration will allow hyperscalers, cloud service providers, and technology developers to design custom AI accelerators (XPUs) that connect directly to Nvidia’s rack-scale AI data center architecture using high-speed interconnects. Beyond data centers, the collaboration extends to co-developing PC silicon for products like RTX Spark and DGX Spark, as well as advancing software-defined vehicle platforms for the automotive sector.
The investment underscores Nvidia’s strategy to embed its proprietary communication standards and rack-level technologies into the broader hardware ecosystem as demand for custom AI chips grows. For MediaTek, the partnership enhances its ability to compete in high-performance enterprise silicon alongside established rivals like Broadcom and Marvell. As global tech infrastructure shifts toward specialized AI processing, this deal strengthens the foundation for cross-company silicon integration and scalable AI deployment worldwide.
