Nvidia Nears $12.9 Billion Acquisition of AI Platform Hugging Face
Artificial intelligence chip leader Nvidia Corporation is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Hugging Face, the prominent platform used by developers worldwide to build, share, and deploy open-source AI models and datasets. According to reports published on September 1–2, 2026, the transaction is valued at approximately $12.9 billion, with the total deal size potentially reaching $14 billion when including a $1 billion employee retention package. If finalized, the acquisition will mark Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang’s largest strategic move outside of Nvidia's core GPU manufacturing business.
Hugging Face, which was valued at $4.5 billion in a 2023 funding round, serves as a vital central repository for generative AI tools, algorithms, and models. Nvidia, already a minority investor alongside Google, Amazon, and Salesforce, aims to integrate Hugging Face’s vast developer ecosystem into its software stack. The acquisition provides Nvidia with a direct connection to millions of machine learning engineers while serving as a strategic hedge against major AI laboratories that are currently developing custom silicon to reduce reliance on Nvidia hardware. Market analysts view the potential deal as a pivotal move toward vertical integration in the global artificial intelligence sector.
