OpenAI Integrates ChatGPT with Epic Electronic Health Records to Assist Clinicians
In a major advancement for artificial intelligence in healthcare, OpenAI announced on September 1, 2026, that it has integrated ChatGPT for Healthcare directly with Epic Systems, the leading electronic health records (EHR) platform used across hospitals managing hundreds of millions of patient profiles. The new feature allows authorized healthcare professionals to pull together patient notes, diagnostic reports, medication histories, and specialist documentations using plain-language conversational prompts.
Designed strictly as a read-only bridge, the integration enables clinicians to quickly summarize medical timelines, identify recent laboratory changes, and prepare for upcoming appointments without manually searching through fragmented charts. OpenAI emphasized that the AI model cannot write back into patient charts, modify prescriptions, or order medical tests, ensuring that clinical liability and final decision-making remain entirely with qualified medical professionals.
Alongside the Epic integration, OpenAI launched a Healthcare Public Data tool that enables clinicians to cross-reference patient information with trusted public databases, including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, and DailyMed. Initial testing, involving over 4,300 evaluations across 27 distinct clinical scenarios with partner institution UCSF Health, demonstrated high safety standards. While healthcare administrators have welcomed the potential to reduce physician burnout and administrative burden, experts stress that rigorous local compliance and patient privacy protocols must remain paramount as hospitals deploy the technology.
