OpenAI Launches 'Astra for Law' to Bring GPT-6 AI Capabilities and Legal Search to Law Firms
Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI has officially unveiled "Astra for Law," a specialized legal platform powered by its latest GPT-6 Astra model, aiming to streamline legal research, contract analysis, and document drafting for law firms and legal technology providers. Introduced on September 17, 2026, the platform integrates a massive legal search index encompassing more than 230 million URLs of US case law, statutes, court rules, and administrative decisions, with updates added on a daily basis.
To ensure compliance with stringent legal industry standards, Astra for Law features enhanced data privacy controls, including Zero Data Retention (ZDR) options for API users and strict confidentiality protections. OpenAI has collaborated with major law firms such as Sullivan & Cromwell, Latham & Watkins, and Ropes & Gray to develop tailored workflows like agreement analyzers and due diligence systems. Additionally, the launch includes 26 partner-built plugins connecting ChatGPT directly with widely used legal software solutions including Thomson Reuters, Harvey, and Clio.
In benchmark evaluations on legal research accuracy, Astra for Law achieved a 54 percent correctness rate, representing a 40 percent relative improvement over standard web search configurations. The rollout marks an escalating race among top AI developers—including Google and Anthropic—to capture market share within the rapidly digitalizing legal sector while addressing privacy and professional liability concerns.
