OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna in India with In-Country Processing on Amazon Bedrock
OpenAI has announced the availability of its state-of-the-art artificial intelligence models, GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna, to businesses and developers in India through Amazon Bedrock. This significant launch, confirmed on August 18-21, 2026, ensures that all inference requests made using these models are processed entirely within India's geographical boundaries. This capability is crucial for Indian enterprises, particularly those in regulated sectors like finance and healthcare, which face stringent data residency and sovereignty requirements.
The new India Geo cross-Region inference profiles, identified as 'in.openai.gpt-5.6-terra' and 'in.openai.gpt-5.6-luna,' automatically route requests across Amazon Web Services (AWS) regions such as Asia Pacific (Mumbai) and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad). This not only ensures compliance with local data governance rules but also provides high throughput and scalability without the need for manual capacity management across multiple regions. The integration of these models on Amazon Bedrock simplifies their adoption, allowing seamless use with existing API interfaces like Responses, Chat Completions, and Converse APIs. Furthermore, the launch is complemented by standard AWS operational tooling, including model invocation logging, CloudWatch metrics, and cost itemization, providing comprehensive oversight for businesses.
This strategic move by OpenAI, in collaboration with AWS, is expected to accelerate the adoption of advanced AI technologies across India. It empowers Indian companies to build and deploy AI-powered applications with greater confidence, fostering innovation within the domestic AI ecosystem and supporting the country's burgeoning role as a global technology hub.
