Philippines Evaluates Smart Farming Technologies to Modernize Agriculture Infrastructure
On September 3, 2026, the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) announced a comprehensive evaluation of smart farming and precision agriculture technologies as part of a national strategy to modernize its agricultural sector. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. led an official delegation to inspect high-tech agricultural operations at the Zhejiang Huihong Fruit and Vegetable Farm in Zhejiang province, China, to analyze scalable digital farming systems.
During the field evaluation, officials examined integrated smart agriculture data platforms that combine real-time environmental monitoring, automated water and fertilizer management, microclimate greenhouse controls, and digital crop tracking. The delegation focused on how digital sensors and automated management tools allow growers to make data-driven decisions, minimizing input waste while optimizing crop health and harvest efficiency.
Secretary Tiu Laurel emphasized that adopting proven digital tools and precision farming methods from international models is critical to addressing domestic yield deficits, climate volatility, and technology gaps. The initiative is expected to pave the way for technology transfer agreements, precision agriculture industry partnerships, and customized digital infrastructure designed to enhance productivity and food security across Philippine farmlands.
