Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana Completes Six Years with Record Fish Production of 197.75 Lakh Tonnes and ₹73,890 Crore Exports
The flagship Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) completed six years of implementation on September 10, 2026, marking a significant milestone in modernizing India's fisheries sector and advancing the national Blue Economy. Launched in 2020 with an overall financial outlay of ₹20,750 crore, the scheme has driven substantial structural reforms across the fisheries value chain, supporting nearly three crore livelihoods nationwide.
Official economic figures released by the Ministry of Fisheries show that annual national fish production increased from 141.64 lakh tonnes in 2019-20 to a record high of 197.75 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25. Concurrently, India's fisheries exports surged from ₹46,663 crore to ₹73,890 crore in 2025-26, reflecting higher domestic output and improved global market realization. The Union Government has reaffirmed its sustained support by allocating a record ₹2,500 crore for the scheme in Budget Estimate 2026-27.
Beyond production numbers, PMMSY has generated direct and indirect employment for over 58 lakh individuals through modern technology infusion—such as Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems, Biofloc technology, and deep-sea cage culture. Furthermore, the government has sanctioned ₹2,797 crore for cold-chain logistics, processing units, and retail marketing infrastructure to minimize post-harvest losses and ensure better income realization for fish farmers and coastal fishing communities.
