Raksha Mantri Approves Transfer of DRDO Missile Technology to Indian Industry for Indigenous Production
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has formally approved the transfer of technology for a wide array of conventional missile systems, originally developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), to India's private and public sector defence industries. This significant decision, announced on August 26, 2026, marks a pivotal step towards achieving 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) within India's defence manufacturing ecosystem. The initiative is specifically designed to empower domestic companies to produce advanced missile systems within the country, thereby substantially reducing the nation's reliance on foreign defence suppliers and fostering a robust internal industry.
The transfer of this critical technology is expected to invigorate local research and development efforts, generate new employment opportunities across the defence sector, and integrate Indian industries more deeply into the global defence supply chain. By enabling the indigenous production of these sophisticated missile systems, the government aims to enhance the operational readiness and capabilities of the Indian armed forces with state-of-the-art weaponry designed and manufactured entirely within India. This move reiterates the government's steadfast commitment to strengthening national security through enhanced self-sufficiency and cultivating a resilient domestic defence industrial base. It is anticipated that this approval will streamline the process for Indian companies to acquire and effectively utilize DRDO-developed expertise, thereby accelerating the pace of innovation and manufacturing output in the vital defence sector.
